Ninety-nine percent of the Junior Class was in attendance for the Prairie State Achievement Examination last week. Of those who were present, 40 accepted various prizes after their name was drawn in a raffle — one of the incentives designed to encourage students to perform their best on the state-mandated test. The selected students won gift certificates to Jimmy John's, Steak 'n Shake, and Wal-Mart, free Homecoming tickets for next year's semiformal dance, and more. Dean Aryan Dohman posted winners' names outside of the cafeteria during lunch periods on April 28 and passed out the prizes.
Other incentives offered to juniors include a parking space for the top 10 scorers on the exam; also, the 15 students whose scores improved the most between the sophomore PLAN test and the PSAE will earn a parking spot for 2009-2010. Results from the test are expected to be released in June, and administrators have high hopes for the Class of 2010. The group is predicted to post the highest PSAE score in district history with a 22 on the ACT portion of the test. This prediction is based on the class' PLAN results from last year.
The freshmen and sophomores also were busy during PSAE week. The freshmen viewed Schindler's List as part of their Global Studies genocide unit on day one, and they took a practice PLAN test on the second day. The sophomores took an ACT test on day one and reviewed their scores on day two. Seniors did not have to attend on either day, but many AP students participated in study sessions for their upcoming exams. |
