ACHS alumnus Casey Maday shared some of his professional musician techniques with the Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble on Feb. 10. The trombonist is one of a few area musicians who have visited the Band Department this school year to pass on their expertise to students.
Band director Matt Kastor said inviting experts to work with his students is the "next step for the program," and it exposes his classes to new perspectives other than his own. He said he hopes eventually to have a specialist for every instrument visit his bands and help the students grow as musicians. Other visitors have included a flutist and a percussionist.
During Maday's guest appearance, he discussed the importance of good posture as well as the role of breathing in relation to sound. He offered practice tips, and he encouraged the students to listen to professional musicians often so they can develop a reference point as to what makes a good sound.
Maday has performed with several groups throughout his career as a trombonist, including the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Monterrey Symphony Orchestra. He also has extensive experience instructing brass players.
