The National Honor Society raised $2,500 for Kids Hope United during its fourth annual Eagle Relay for Life on Sept. 27.
Approximately 145 runners/walkers participated in the three-hour event, which involved taking laps around the track as well as competing in a three-legged race, an egg race, an egg toss, and other games.
Sophomore Raquel Jackson-Stone and junior Sami Detterbeck won prizes for completing the most laps with 43 and 41, respectively. Prizes included gift cards from RJ's Eatery, The Twisted Cow, Culver's, Wal-Mart, McDonald's, and Regal Cinema. NorStates Bank provided water.
Each NHS member contributed at least $30 in pledges. Faculty members Sandy Jarrett and Brie Cederna also formed a team, jogging and walking three miles on that Sunday afternoon. Jarrett, who raised about $200 in pledges, said she wanted to contribute to the cause because many of her past and present students rely on the services of Kids Hope United.
Members of NHS are students who demonstrate scholarship, leadership, character, and service. The group's goal is to sponsor one fundraiser and one service project each year. Members also are expected to fulfill individual service hours throughout the school year. NHS is sponsored by teachers Jeff Gutke and Pat Goodrich. |
