A committee comprising faculty and administrators met over the summer to develop a new School Improvement Plan, which focuses on three core areas: Instruction and Assessment, the Eagle Way, and Technology and Curriculum. The new three-year plan replaces the school's first ever plan, which expired last year.
Assistant Principal Dave Newberry said the committee started with a brainstorming session and gradually refined the ideas to create the core categories. The committee then solidified two or three focuses within each category. For example, teacher use of CRISS teaching strategies and the continued emphasis on writing using the MY Access! program are included in the Instruction and Assessment area. Administrators and members of the School Improvement Plan committee read Barbara Blackburn's Rigor is NOT a Four-Letter Word to set the tone of their meetings and the development of the new plan.
"It was a good process," said Newberry. "I think the goals will get into the classrooms."
To ensure this, each department is using the School Improvement Plan as a guideline to formulate its own goals. One member of the School Improvement Plan committee is responsible for helping each department work through its goals and for posting the department's progress on a Wiki.
