But the flags and posters still weren't enough for the Spanish teachers, so they spent several days over the summer painting murals depicting Spanish art in their classrooms. Teachers Tina Kupsco, Amber Cornelius, Kirsten Gabrielsen, and Joanna Kotecki painted Pablo Picasso's Don Quixote and Dove of Peace, as well as Salvador Dali's Persistence of Memory in their classrooms to better connect students to the Spanish culture. "[The paintings are] a good conversation piece," said Rachel Morales, Foreign Language Department chair. "They bring culture into each classroom." The teachers chose artwork that made an impression on them, and they hope to add more murals to the Foreign Language hallway in the future. The main hallway just outside of the guidance office is also being beautified by two 2009 graduates, Christina Garcia and Christina Van Dellen. The duo has been working on a mural of Illinois wildlife, including an eagle, since last spring.
