The seven Eagles who attended the Illinois Youth Summit on May 1 had the opportunity to debate with real policy makers about three constitutional issues currently being discussed at the state and federal levels.
In preparation for the summit, senior Laura Ban and junior Tyler McChristian attended a few preliminary meetings in Chicago as members of the student advisory committee. There, they helped select three policies of relevance to their age group that they wanted to explore further during the summit: cyberbullying, lowering the drinking age, and medicinal marijuana.
Once that was done, the LCHS group met with sponsor Eric Vichnick once a week for a couple of months to compose position papers about one of the topics, cyberbullying. They also created an eight-minute-long public service announcement video about cyberbullying, a service learning project which they presented at the summit. Click here to view the PSA.
Vichnick says the summit offered students a real-world experience as well as the opportunity to interact with representatives from the 16 other participating high schools to develop a stance on a relevant issue. Other participants included Sarah Beckman, Emma Howard, Callie Bretthauer, Aarrius Smith, and Vedant Vasavda.
