The regular season is officially over for the JV Academic Team, but because of its success this year, they have earned an invitation to the national competition in Chicago in June.
The team comprising 14 freshmen and sophomores ended the season with a 15-3 record and a third place finish in the North Suburban Conference, just behind Stevenson High School and Lake Zurich High School.
Team sponsor Amber Cornelius says her proudest moment was when "we beat Stevenson. We're the only team that's beaten them."
A conference meet consists of three matches, 16 questions each match. Questions are pulled from various categories, including math, fine arts, literature, history, science, and pop culture. Cornelius says to prepare for the matches, the team scrimmages.
The JV Team is trying to raise money so it can afford to compete at nationals. So far, they have had one Wendy's night; another one is scheduled for Feb. 18 from 4-8 p.m. at the Lindenhurst Wendy's.
Students on the team include Mike Dexheimer, Raquel Jackson-Stone, Ben Mol, Chelsea Visser, Ryan Neubeck, Lee Pixler, Adam Fischer, Erik Anderson, Justin Dodd, Veronica Sprague, Nate Zilligen, Patrick Chen, Mike Penn, and Danielle Latza.
