Army leads P.E. students in military workout
Army crawls, bear crawls, crab walks, planks, butterfly kicks, and other military fitness activities left P.E. students with sore abs, floor burns, and a glimpse into the daily life of an Army soldier.
Representatives from the Army taught P.E. classes on Thursday, Jan. 14 during one of the P.E. Department's fitness days.
"I felt that it was important for the students to be exposed to a new style of exercise that is tough, but still rather fun," said Mark Ring, P.E. Department chair. "Talking with some physical education teachers, they were impressed that some students who do not work up to their potential were really pushing themselves with the Army men."
Ring said the opportunity came about through communication with Army Sergeant Press, who has built a relationship with the school through other collaborative efforts, such as the 21-gun salute for the Eagles' Sept. 11 football game. Ring contacted other schools who had the Army teach their P.E. classes for a day; all of them were pleased with the Army's visit—responses that prompted Ring to invite the soldiers to LCHS.
"Besides a few knees that were banged up from the Army crawling, the students had a wonderful time," Ring said.
