High attendance leads to high academic performance — and ice cream rewards
Students with perfect attendance during the Progress 5 grading period earned an ice cream treat during their lunch periods on Monday, Feb. 15. This is one incentive the administration has devised to encourage students to come to school every day and, thus, achieve higher grades in their classes.
Three hundred sixty-five students qualified for ice cream during Progress 5. The high for the year so far is 586 students during Progress 2.
"...the interaction between the teacher and student is the real strength of the learning process," said Assistant Principal Dave Newberry. "If it was not, then all of our students would be at home learning on the computer."
Administrators met with each of the classes at the beginning of the school year to set class goals regarding average attendance and other measurable factors. For example, the Senior Class set an average attendance goal of 94 percent and ended first semester with a 94.8 percent average attendance rate. The school-wide goal is 95 percent.
Because attendance rates tend to decline during the second semester, administrators recently held another set of meetings with each of the classes to remind them about their goals. Administrators also continue to offer incentives, such as the ice cream rewards and free Prom tickets to juniors and seniors with perfect attendance for the year. Seniors who have a 95 percent attendance rate in a class also can qualify for exemption from the class' final exam.
LCHS is a leader in Lake County for attendance. Last October, the school earned third place in the Lake County Regional Office of Education's Attendance Week competition. Seniors Carly Wade and Lauren Bernard represented the Eagles to accept the award. |
