Fishing season is here, and the bass fishing team is reeling in its competition in hopes of another successful season.
Last year, the team’s debut year, the team placed fifth out of ten teams at Sectionals and won the Stevenson High School Invitational. Coach Brian Cardarella believes the team has the potential to end with similar results this year.
“I think we can compete with the best because we have the help of some expert volunteers,” said Cardarella, who also teaches in the Applied Technology Department at LCHS. Science teacher Mark Prosise is the other coach.
Tryouts were held earlier this month and consisted of a performance test, in which students demonstrated their close and long range casting abilities, and a written test, which tested students’ knowledge of the sport. Seventeen students were welcomed to the team.
Practice includes classroom instruction as well as fishing on the Chain O’ Lakes. Students will also learn how to use certain lures.
Sectionals are scheduled for April 23. Only four students can compete in sectionals, so the team will have to decide who will actually fish that day. This will be determined by a combination of the students’ scores at tryouts and practice performance.
Besides sectionals, there is a possibility that there could be a tournament every Saturday in May. The dates for these tournaments have not been finalized yet. Story by Marc Borzick
