The LCHS library promoted the Young Adult Library Services Association's Teen Read Week from Oct. 18-22 with various activities related to this year's theme, "Books with Beat."
Media specialist Katie Plese said the library invited students to create a playlist of five songs that represented or related to their favorite book. Many students picked up submission forms and blank CDs, she said, and some of the CDs might be played during passing periods in the coming weeks.
Additionally, the library set up a display of books related to the theme, such as "Crime Beat," "Heart Beat," and "Sports Beat." Students who check out a book from the display had their named entered in a raffle.
The week culminated with Drop Everything and Read, during which the entire school put aside their work to read for pleasure for 30 minutes. This was the second D.E.A.R. of the year; three more remain.
"I hope it's a break from the daily routine," Plese said about D.E.A.R. "The point is to get kids to read for fun."
She added that she hopes to expand the D.E.A.R. initiative in the future with a program such as one book, one school. The library has other fun plans in store for the year, including the second annual Edible Book Festival in April.
