Making the most out of half days Peace, Love & Drums — and PSAE review, too
LCHS proved on March 24 that a lot of learning can be crammed into a three and a half hour school day. Students arrived to school at 11:15 a.m., after teachers had completed their half day meetings, and left at the usual release time of 2:50 p.m.
For most of the day, freshmen through seniors visited four of their classes and participated in various reading and math activities in preparation for the Prairie State Achievement Exam, the state-mandated test that determines whether or not a school is making adequate yearly progress. Students will visit their other four classes for a similar routine during the next half day on April 21. The PSAE tests are scheduled for April 28 and 29, and LCHS has implemented several initiatives to ensure the Junior Class is ready.
To wrap up the day, students assembled in the gymnasium for Peace, Love & Drums, an hour-long performance by award winning drummer Hannah Ford. Ford jammed on her set and, at one point, invited student drummers to join in with various percussion instruments. Ford's message: to encourage the continuance of music education in schools and to encourage students to reach for their dreams, no matter how far off they might seem.
