Mass texting, sketch comedy show raise money for Haiti
 |
A couple of initiatives are underway at LCHS to offer assistance to the island nation of Haiti, which suffered the effects of a devastating earthquake last week. As many as 100,000 reportedly were killed, and others are awaiting medical care for injuries.
Recognizing an opportunity to help, International Relations students and teacher Eric Vichnick met a few times over the past few days to come up with a plan. Their decision: to encourage the student body to send a text message during lunch periods on Thursday, Jan. 21 and Friday, Jan. 22. Students have permission from the administration to use their cell phones to text "Friends" to 90999. Each text contributes $5 to the World Food Programme; the donation is applied to monthly cell phone bills. Students also can make cash donations during lunch periods.
FCA sponsors Nancy Clutter and Cathy Ingram and science teacher Kari Bodine also contributed to the "Lakes Lends a Hand to Haiti" initiative. Students involved include seniors Callie Bretthauer, Sarah Beckman, Tyler McChristian, Emma Howard, Kelly Dean, and Erin McGill.
Drama teacher Bridget Sundin also is making plans to utilize her talents and the talents of her students to raise money for the World Food Programme to benefit Haiti. She is planning to move the performance date of the annual sketch comedy show from May to sometime just before or just after spring break in order to raise money as soon as possible. The Studio Advanced class and Stagecraft & Stagecraft Advanced class, which write and perform the show, will request a $5 donation for admission. The show generally is free. More details will be released soon, as plans are finalized. |
