On the morning of April 21, about 115 middle school students entered the LCHS auditorium with hesitation, uncertainty. By the end of the day, they were singing a different tune. That's because they spent all day getting to know new people and, above all, learning how to be more effective student leaders.
LCHS' four sender schools were represented at the first annual Leadership Conference organized by the Student Council. Millburn West and Central, Palombi, and Antioch Upper Grade schools sent their student leadership teams as well as other students who demonstrate leadership qualities to the conference, which largely was organized by junior Jessica Quinn and senior Andrew Seketa.
The day started with breakfast and a welcome from Principal Jim McKay. The sixth through eighth graders then were divided into groups led by the 17 Student Council members and class officers, and the day continued with various leadership-focused activities.
Katie Plese, Student Council sponsor, said the council has been planning the student-organized, student-run event since January 2009, after finding inspiration from attending a Jostens leadership conference. Plese said she was pleased to see the "students engaged all day" and looks forward to next year's event. |
