Science teachers Kevin McLean, Mark Prosise, and Jeff Newton attended training this summer to prepare to teach.
Some District 117 science teachers have been attending summer training in preparation to implement the third phase of Physics First, a program that flip-flops the traditional high school science curriculum. This year will be the first time that junior students take biology instead of a physics class; they took physics "first" as freshmen.
LCHS hosted teachers from ACHS, Highland Park, and Waukegan for the training led by Simon Holdaway with the Biotechnology Institute. Training continues at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine on Aug. 4 and 5 and concludes at ACHS on Aug. 6. The purpose of the institute is to prepare teachers for the more advanced biology instruction they will be offering their juniors. According to Mark Prosise, Science Department Chair at LCHS, some LCHS biology teachers also have been part of publishing a new lab-based junior level biology curriculum this summer. The curriculum is entitled, "NUBIO," or Northwestern University's Biological Investigations in Oncofertility.
"The early phases of this curriculum will begin to be piloted in schools around the country this fall," Prosise said.
