Pi Day, Health Fair, Othello: A smorgasbord of learning fun
Smorgasbords offer a little something for everyone. In LCHS' case on Friday, March 12, those little somethings included Pi Day in the Math Department, a Health Fair during P.E. classes, and an Iago vs. Othello battle of words for the AP English Literature and Composition classes.
Students in Jill Farrell's pre-calculus honors class celebrated Pi Day, first by completing a circumference activity with random circular objects such as a baseball, Frisbee, and sombrero, then by enjoying French silk, cherry, and Oreo pies, among other varieties. Pi Day is celebrated every year on March 14, which corresponds with 3.14 — the three digits that start the number that never ends.
After filling themselves with slices of pie, students headed to their P.E. classes to burn a few calories at the first ever Health Fair. Students floated from station to station to participate in physical activities, watch demonstrations, and learn information from various professionals, including the Lake Villa Police Department.
Kate Petrie's AP English students moved from their desks to a more spacious hallway away from other classrooms to passionately recite lines as either Iago or Othello from Shakepeare's Othello. Most of the students were assigned the antagonist Iago; they stood in an intimidating circle around the smaller group of Othello actors, using the appropriate tone and inflection during their recitations in attempt to portray Iago as the manipulative character that he is. Othello actors had the chance to fire back with their own lines in an Othello-like manner.
