Student acquires assistance from Uno, the service dog

Freshman Alex Callahan soon will have a unique privilege at LCHS: he'll get to bring his dog to school. Uno, his 14-month-old English yellow lab, is a service dog who will be assisting Callahan later this semester. Callahan waited several years to have approval to have a service dog. Uno has been living with the Callahan family for nearly a month, and the trainer has him working every other Sunday at home and around the school. Callahan’s reaction to the news of his very first service dog was “…surprised because I never had one before. I was very excited, and I told everybody.” It is rare for students to be able to receive a service dog because, according to Brie Cederna, special education coordinator, adults who need a service dog are first priority. Cederna said she welcomes questions and concerns about the dog and advises: “Though students and staff will be excited to see and pet the dog, it is very important to remember that he is working, so you cannot touch him.” Uno will be the first service dog to ever walk the halls in LCHS history. Students will receive more information about how to appropriately respond to Uno within the next few weeks during their second period classes. Story by senior Katie Hay
